action

Tillie Schlaine meets Peter Seltzer at the party of her friends Gertrude and Burt.

Peter is a bachelor with strange habits. He does motivation research for a company in San Francisco; in his spare time he plays ragtime on the piano and plays bad word games. He shows up occasionally at Tillie's, but doesn't answer for days and then comes back to her at the door. When they have sex, it turns out that Tillie was a virgin.

Peter apparently continues to meet other women, but when he is promoted, Tillie tells the time to get married. Eventually they get married, buy a house, and have a baby. However, Peter continues to have affairs and Tillie even has to turn down one of his lunchtime affairs.

Finally her nine-year-old son Robbie falls seriously ill. When he dies, Peter and Tillie's marriage falls apart and Tillie's faith is shaken.

Tillie renounces sex and Peter drinks and takes his own apartment. Tillie's depression is tempered by her friendship with the gay Jimmy, who would even be willing to marry Tillie so that she would be happy. When they try to get Gertrude to reveal her real age, a public fight breaks out between the women.

Tillie ends up in a sanitarium. After Peter hid for years that the death of her son would affect him too, one day he visits Tillie. When she sees that he is mourning too, they make up again.
