René Murat Auberjonois (born June 1, 1940 in New York City , † December 8, 2019 in Los Angeles ) was an American film and theater actor and voice actor .

Life

His grandfather was the Swiss painter René Auberjonois . His father Fernand was a journalist, married to the French princess Laure Louise Murat, descendant of the Napoleonic Marshal and King of Naples, Joachim Murat , as well as a sister of Napoleon, Caroline Bonaparte . Shortly after World War II , the family moved to Paris , where Auberjonois decided to become an actor at the age of six when he was in a musical at school .

The family moved from Paris to a New York bohemian district, where René Auberjonois met musicians, composers and actors. There he met his later mentor John Houseman , from whom he got his first job at the theater at the age of 16. His family then moved to London , where Auberjonois graduated from high school and continued to learn the theater trade.

After returning to the United States, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in drama from Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania . He won a Tony Award for his appearance in the Broadway musical about Coco Chanel , Coco with Katharine Hepburn .

Auberjonois had his first feature film role in MASH in 1970 and then played in two other films by director Robert Altman . During the 1970s, supporting roles in successful film productions such as Die Hindenburg , King Kong and The Eyes of Laura Mars followed, as well as numerous appearances in US television productions. In 1980 he took on a role in the television series Benson , in which he played Clayton Endicott III for six years .

In 1991, Auberjonois received the role of Colonel West in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Land , which, however, was largely cut from the theatrical and television versions of the film, so that he was only briefly seen twice in the film. From 1993 to 1999 he played again in a Star Trek production, this time the shape shifter Odo in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Since the 1980s he has only seldom been seen in cinema productions and in smaller supporting roles, such as Dr. Burton in Batman Forever (1995) and as Reverend Oliver in The Patriot (2000).

In 2002 he took on the role of Professor Abronsius in Dance of the Vampires , the Broadway production of the musical Dance of the Vampires .

Auberjonois was also known as a voice actor, for example, he spoke the boss Louis in the English version of Disney's Ariel, the Mermaid and has also recorded many audio books. From 2010 to 2013 he was also the voice actor for the television series Pound Puppies - Der Pfotenclub . In the Uncharted video game series, Auberjonois played the role of Karl Schaefer .

Since 1964, Auberjonois has been involved in more than 220 productions, both as an actor and as a voice actor. He also appeared as a director on the series Marblehead Manor and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . In 1999 he received the OFTA Television Award for Best Actor. He was nominated for an Emmy twice.

Auberjonois was married to actress Judith Mahalyi since 1963 and has two children, Tessa Auberjonois and Remy Auberjonois , who are also both actors. He died of lung cancer on December 8, 2019 .
