The Jeffersons (original title: The Jeffersons ) is an American sitcom that was broadcast on CBS from 1975 to 1985 . The series came to a total of 253 episodes in eleven seasons. It was one of the longest and most popular African American series on US television.

George Jefferson is a successful owner of a profitable cleaning company. Due to the strong economic growth of his cleaning business, he decides to move his family to a better area. He moves to the posh Upper East Side of New York City with his wife Louise and son Lionel . There, however, completely new everyday social problems await him.

The Jefferson is a spin-off (so-called. Spin-off) of the highly successful US sitcom All in the Family , in which the Jeffersons played a neighboring family. The series was produced by Norman Lear and broadcast on CBS .

Awards

From 1979 to 1985 the series and its actors were nominated for Emmy several times . Isabel Sanford won the award in 1981 for best actress in a comedy. She was the first African American woman to get an Emmy. Larry Harris received an Emmy in 1983 for outstanding video editing of an episode ( Change of a Dollar ).

There were a total of eight nominations for the Golden Globe between 1977 and 1985, including in the category "Best TV Series".

Sherman Hemsley and Marla Gibbs won the 1982 Image Award for Best Actor Performance in a Series.

The character of George Jefferson was chosen in the US television magazine TV Guide at number 44 in the "List of the 50 Greatest TV Fathers of All Time" (June 20, 2004 issue).

Others

The series was abruptly canceled as a result of a dispute by CBS . A proper series finale did not materialize. The performers were not informed of this; Hemsley himself said he learned of the show's cancellation from the newspaper.
