Sherman Alexander Hemsley (born February 1, 1938 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † July 24, 2012 in El Paso , Texas ) was an American actor .

Life

Hemsley was best known for the role of George Jefferson in the sitcom The Jeffersons . For this he was nominated for an Emmy in 1984. Two years earlier, Hemsley received an Image Award for his role . He later had many guest roles, including in the sitcom The Prince of Bel-Air . In 1984 he made a guest appearance on the Italian television show Grand Hotel . In 1986 he also appeared in the comedy Ghost Fever as a racist ghost in front of the camera. In 1987 he met the US President Ronald Reagan and the General Secretary of the CPSU , Mikhail Gorbachev , during a celebration of the Cleveland International Peace Proceedings. Hemsley also appeared in the animated series Family Guy ; there he invented his own religion. He was also seen in the Michael Jackson video for Liberian Girl .

Sherman Hemsley died of lung cancer on July 24, 2012 .
