Marla Gibbs
Marla Gibbs (born June 14, 1931 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actress , singer and television producer .
Life
Gibbs was married in 1944 and had three children by the age of 20. She attended Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago with Sam Cooke . In 1969 she divorced her husband. Before starting her film career, she worked for United Airlines . She only gave up this job when the series The Jeffersons , in which she played the role of Florence Johnston, was a success.
In addition to her role in The Jeffersons, she had a leading role in the US sitcom 227, which she also produced. In addition to this work, she has had recurring roles on series such as Alone Among Neighbors and guest appearances on series such as Love Boat , College Fever , The Prince of Bel-Air and King of Queens .
Gibbs ran a movie theater in the 1990s that closed in 1997, as well as Marla's Memory Lane jazz supper club in Los Angeles . In May 2006 she recorded the CD It's Never Too Late . Together with her sister Susie Garrett , she founded the Crossroads Art Academy acting school in Los Angeles.
Awards
Gibbs was nominated a total of five times for the NAACP's Image Award between 1982 and 2006 , but was only able to win it in 1982 in the category Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in The Jeffersons. In 1985 she was also nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in The Jeffersons . She was nominated five times for the Emmy Award between 1981 and 1985.
