Little Jo - A woman among wolves ( The Ballad of Little Jo ) is an American film drama by Maggie Greenwald from 1993.
action
Josephine Monaghan belongs to higher social circles. She gives birth to a child out of wedlock, which leads to a falling out with her father. Monaghan hands the child over to her sister and travels to the Wild West . She is often sexually harassed, which is why she disguises herself as a man. She is addressed with "Jo".
Monaghan comes to Ruby City, where she meets Percy Corcoran. Corcoran gets her a job and teaches her how to survive in the Wild West. However, Monaghan realizes that he treats women badly. He often says that women cause more trouble than they are worth . He abuses a prostitute who refuses to serve him. Monaghan fears that he might discover her secret and gets a job as a shepherd . She later buys her own farm.
Ruby City-based Mary Addie thinks "Jo" is attractive. She is traded as his future wife among the locals .
One day Monaghan saves the Chinese Tinman Wong from being lynched ; she hires him on her farm. On the same day Corcoran hands her a letter from her sister, which he opened and read. He gets angry because he was deceived and tried to rape her. He later extorted money from Monaghan for his silence.
One day "Jo" and her friend Frank Badger are attacked by masked men in Ruby City. Badger kills one of the men, but is injured. "Jo" kills the other attackers; killing affects them.
A few years later "Jo" becomes seriously ill and dies. Only now do the local residents find out that "Jo" was a woman. At the end a newspaper is shown reporting their story.
Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film portrayed a bold picture of the American West in the 19th century. His action is a "masterpiece of detail and intelligence" ("masterpiece of detail and intelligence"). However, the last scene does not match the rest of the film. The transformation of Suzy Amis into a male figure seems credible.
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on September 10, 1993 that he did not think Suzy Amis could pass for a man. The director concentrates “wisely” on the portrayal of life in the Wild West.
Awards
Suzy Amis and David Chung were nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 1994.
