Sawitinsk ( Russian Завитинск ) is a city with 11,481 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Amur Oblast in Russia . It is the administrative center of the Sawitinsk Rajon of the same name .

geography

The city is located east of the Savitaya River , a tributary of the Amur , 169 km from the regional capital Blagoveshchensk and 35 km from the nearest city Raichichinsk .

The landscape around the city is open and flat with a slightly undulating surface. The rivers and streams are small; the largest of them is the Merkushevka River. The climate is distinctly highly continental .

history

The village was founded in 1906 and named after the Sawitaja brook of the same name (in German the winding one , etymology comparable to the Windau ), which was perceived by the explorers to be extremely winding. An important event was the construction of the Amur section of the Trans-Siberian Railway from 1912, on which the Sawitaja station was built here in 1914 . A branch line to Pojarkowo am Amur, opened in 1941, branches off here .

In 1936 the village received urban-type settlement rights and, in 1954, city rights.
