The Venta (German name: Windau ) is a river in northwestern Lithuania and western Latvia .
It rises near Kuršėnai (Kurschenen) in the Lithuanian district of Šiauliai (Schaulen) and flows into the Baltic Sea at Ventspils (German: Windau ) in Latvia .
In its course the Venta passes the places Užventis , Viekšniai , Mažeikiai in Lithuania, Skrunda and Kuldīga (German: Goldingen ) in Latvia. In Kuldīga the river falls over the shallow, but with 240 m possibly widest waterfall in Europe, Ventas Rumba . It experiences larger tributaries from the Abava (Abau) , the Virvyčia and the Varduva , the latter flowing near the Lithuanian-Latvian border. Other tributaries are the Viešetė , the Vadakstis and the Ciecere . At the mouth, the Venta is 200 meters wide. By artificially enlarging the river bed, large oil tankers can use the river port at Ventspils.
The length on Latvian territory is about 178 km.
