The Abava (German Abau ) is a river in western Latvia .

The river has its source in a marshland near Lestene and initially flows north in a straightened river bed. Below Kandava , the now winding river bed runs west to the confluence with the Venta . There are several rapids on the Abava as a result of dolomite formations. The largest is Abavas rumba , a two meter high waterfall near Sabile .

  • The largest tributaries are Viesata, Imula and Amula.
  • Because of the rapids, the Abava is popular with water tourists and canoeists.
