Lestene ( German Lesten ) is a place in western Latvia , not far from Jaunpils .
history
The Lesten manor was owned by the Duke of Courland . It was owned by the von der Recke family since 1576 .
The place is best known for the memorial of the Latvian SS legionaries with the monumental sculpture Motherland Latvia by Arta Dumpe . It is on the road to Jaunpils next to the Lutheran church. The bones of 934 fallen legionaries were buried here. The first cross was erected in Lestene on May 8, 1997 and the first section of the military cemetery with sculpture was inaugurated on November 5, 2000.
Attractions
The Lesten estate with its park can be visited. The river Lestene flows not far from the village.
