List of former synagogues in the Westerwald

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Of the 15 or so synagogues that were located in the Westerwald region , only a few were able to avoid being destroyed by the Nazis during the November pogroms in 1938 . The preserved houses of worship are mostly buildings that had previously been abandoned by their parishes or whose destruction was not or only incompletely carried out due to the proximity to neighboring houses.

The following list shows the buildings of former synagogues in the Westerwald that were destroyed and are now used for other purposes.

In 1816 the first “Jewish school” was built in the village, which was consecrated as a synagogue in 1877 after being largely rebuilt. In the larger wing there was the synagogue hall above and the schoolroom below (until 1904). The side and entrance building included stairs, gallery and bathroom. Subsequently plastered brick . When the Jewish community was dissolved in 1935, the synagogue was sold and therefore not destroyed, but considerably changed, emptied and used as a storage room. It is still privately owned today. The reconstruction shows more clearly the medieval round arch and pilaster strip style from 1877. In 2010, an association was founded which is committed to the permanent preservation of the synagogue.
