history

Several barrows were discovered near the Heckholzhäuser sports field in the direction of Merenberg, which can be assigned to the transition from the Hallstatt period to the La Tène period . Due to the part of the name -hausen (at the houses) there is a continuous settlement of the place since the Merovingian settlement period around the 6./7. Century.

Heckholzhausen was first mentioned in a document in 879 as Holzhausen . The reason for the mention was a donation of three Mansus Lands with which Count Gebhard im Lahngau endowed the St. Severus Abbey in Gemünden in the Westerwald, which he had founded . To distinguish it from other places with the same name, the name was later prefixed with "Heck–".

In the 13th century was in Heckholzhausen the castle Heckholzhausen the noble family contactor von Holzhausen built. This castle was already in ruins by the 16th century. In the 14th century, the Counts of Nassau-Hadamar had a farm in Heckholzhausen. From 1709 a fair is guaranteed, but it went out shortly afterwards.

In the first half of the 19th century, the six communities Heckholzhausen, Obertiefenbach, Gaudernbach , Wirbelau , Eschenau and Schupbach formed a fire fighting district. When a fire broke out, certain residents with four harnessed horses had to fetch the fire engine stationed in Schupbach immediately .

From 1906 to 1958 the place was connected to the railway network via the Kerkerbachbahn .

The Carl-Heinz tunnel at the end of the village in the direction of Lahr was one of the most productive German manganese mines .

Territorial reform

The municipality of Heckholzhausen merged on December 31, 1970 as part of the regional reform in Hesse with the previously independent municipalities of Obertiefenbach , Niedertiefenbach and Schupbach (all in the former Oberlahnkreis ) to form the municipality of Beselich . It was named after the Beselich monastery . Local districts according to the Hessian municipal code were not established.

The contactor from Holzhausen

The Freiherr von Holzhausen contactor come from a Burgmann family of Burg Merenberg . Originally they were called Schütz von Merenberg. They belonged to the families that Hartrad IV. (1182-1215) expelled from Merenberg. The family built a defensive house in Heckholzhausen and took the name Schütz von Holzhausen. The Schütz had free float in neighboring Lahr and Elsoff , which they gradually expanded. In 1424, a castle man's seat of the family at Runkel Castle was first mentioned. In 1430 they had the right to tithe in what is now the desert of Mechtelndorf near Merenberg. As heirs of the related Räuber von Kaan family , the Schütz von Holzhausen were able to acquire a bailiwick over the hamlet of Panau and other free float near Neustadt from 1535 onwards . For the year 1599 it is documented that the family held a third of the tithe of the village of Lahr as a fief of the Westerburg .

With Giselbrecht Schütz von Holzhausen, a member of this family was named for the first time in 1315. In the centuries that followed, members of the family repeatedly held office positions. In 1406 Heinrich Schütz von Holzhausen was bailiff of the County of Katzenelnbogen in the Driedorf district, and in 1431 he was in the service of the Landgraviate of Hesse . Antonius Schütz von Holzhausen (1435–1515) was the first bailiff of the Nassau Merenberg office. The grave slab of Gilbrecht Schütz von Holzhausen, Vogt zu Panau, who died in 1539, can be seen today at the parish church in Neustadt . In 1618 Philipp Cuno Schütz von Holzhausen was court master of Dierdorf in the county of Wied.
