The castle Merenburg is the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle on the 337  m above sea level. NHN high Schloßberg, a basalt cone above the municipality of Merenberg in the Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg .

history

Merenberg Castle is first mentioned in a document in 1129 and has been under the rule of Gleiberg since 1163 and with the Merenbergers with a few cent and count rights .

In 1333 the castle came to the line of those of Nassau-Weilburg through marriage, became a summer residence, from 13th / 14th. Century occupied by noble castle men and in the 16./17. Century with a bailiff. In 1646 during the Thirty Years' War the castle was destroyed.

The castle has a 22 m high round donjon that is visible from afar and can be climbed as a lookout tower . A corner of the three-story palace and remains of outer walls and cellars have been preserved.
