history

The tower castle of the 12th century was expanded into a moated castle with an outer bailey in the 14th century . It was the ancestral seat of the knight family von Elkerhausen, which was first mentioned in a document in 1191 and died out in 1725. In 1352 the Landfriedensheer under Archbishop Balduin von Trier besieged the Talburg, which was razed (not destroyed) after signing an original feud contract with the consent of the castle garrison . Some members of the knight family von Elkerhausen then built the hill fort Neu-Elkerhausen an der Lahn across from Gräveneck (district of Weinbach ). “Old” Elkerhausen was expanded into a moated castle with five-tower, polygonal barriers and a farm yard in the course of the 16th century . The two Elkerhausen castles are often confused in literature and their history is mixed up.
