Karen Mantler

Karen Mantler (* 1966 in New York City , New York) is an American jazz musician .

The daughter of Carla Bley and Michael Mantler accompanied her parents on their concert tours since birth. At the age of four she took part in the recording of her mother's album Escalator over the Hill . She learned the carillon and was a member of the Carla Bley Band from 1977 to 1980 . While studying at Berklee College of Music , she switched to organ and piano.

In 1987 she came back to New York, where she formed a band with Eric Mingus , Jonathan Sanborn , Steve Weisberg , Ethan Winogrand , Marc Muller , Steven Bernstein and Pablo Calogero . With this she recorded her first album My Cat Arnold with her own compositions, which, like the following two, was dedicated to her cat Arnold.

She made two European tours with the band and performed with them at the Montreal International Jazz Festival . She then worked with Steve Swallow , Motohiko Hino and Jack Bruce and, from 1992 onwards, undertook several European tours as organist with the Carla Bley Big Band . She has participated in several live performances of Escalator Over the Hill . In 1996 she appeared as a singer in her father's opera The School Of Understanding in Copenhagen.

In 2000 she engaged Joe Gallant to record his CD Shadowhead . In 2001 she appeared as a singer with Annie Whiteheads Band at the Robert Wyatt- organized Meltdown Festival at London's Royal Festival Hall .
