Motohiko Hino

Motohiko "Toko" Hino ( Japanese 日 野 元 彦 , Hino Motohiko ; born January 3, 1946 in Tokyo ; † May 13, 1999 ) was a Japanese jazz drummer.

Hino was the brother of the cornetist Terumasa Hino , with whom he also played and recorded. He began working professionally in 1963, including with Hiroshi Watanabe and the Tokyo Union Orchestra . In Japan he recorded with guest musicians such as Jean-Luc Ponty and Joe Henderson . In 1971 he accompanied the singer Helen Merrill in the Gary Peacock Trio . He played in his brother's quintet at the JazzFest Berlin 1971 and at the Newport Jazz Festival 1973. After his brother went to the USA in 1975, he led his own trios. In 1978 he also moved to the USA, where he worked a. a. with Joe Henderson. In 1979 he played in Hugh Masekela's band and from 1980 in Joanne Brackeen's Trio. In his albums he often took on themes from rock musicians such as Mick Jagger , Keith Richards , Jimmy Page and Robert Plant . He can also be heard on albums by Bob Degen , Johnny Hartman , Roland Hanna , Toshiko Akiyoshi , Lew Tabackin , Mal Waldron and Kiyoshi Sugimoto . His drumming is influenced by Tony Williams and Elvin Jones .
