Yoshio Ikeda

Yoshio Ikeda ( Japanese 池田 芳 夫 Ikeda Yoshio ; born January 1, 1942 in Kumano-Tamura (today: Toyonaka ), Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz musician ( double bass ).

As a teenager he became interested in rockabilly and Mickey Curtis, who popularized it in Japan, and in particular for Charlie Parker . After leaving middle school and working briefly for Matsushita , he played with a few colleagues in a "Hawaiian band". When he turned 17, he took classical lessons with Shigeo Maeno of the NHK Symphony Orchestra for five years . When he was fired after two years with Matsushita, he played professionally in a tango band. At 21 Jun'ichirō Ōta (1933-2017) became aware of him and took him on in his jazz band. At 23 he played in the Yasuo Ōsawa Trio, for which he moved to Tokyo.

In the 1960s he studied jazz double bass with Gary Peacock . In 1968 he was one of the Modern Jazz All Stars of Shungo Sawada , then he recorded with Hozan Yamamoto , Sadao Watanabe , Masabumi Kikuchi and Masahiko Togashi . He led his own combos in the 1970s, with which he released albums with his own compositions. In 1982 he played the album Esprit in a duo with Aki Takase . He also worked with Johnny Hartman , Terumasa Hino , Steve Lacy , Akira Miyazawa , Yuji Ohno , Allan Praskin , Masahiko Sato and Kiyoshi Sugimoto .
