Marshall Otwell (born December 8, 1944 ) is an American jazz musician ( piano ) of modern jazz , who especially excelled as a companion to Carmen McRae .

Live and act

Otwell grew up in a suburb of Toledo, Ohio, in a household where almost everyone could play the piano. He performed as a pianist in high school and when he attended Princeton University , jazz became his passion. He spent much of his nights listening to pianists in New York jazz clubs. After settling in Laguna Beach , he tried to establish himself in the Los Angeles music scene. In 1975 his friend, bassist Luther Hughes, learned that singer Carmen McRae was putting together a new band. From the mid-1970s, Otwell mainly worked in their accompanying combo (with Joey Baron , among others ), to be heard on albums such as At Ratso's , At the Great American Music Hall (1976), Heat Wave (with Cal Tjader , 1982) and For Lady Day (1983). In later years he worked in New York for vocalists such as Ernestine Anderson ( Be Mine Tonight ), Barbara Adamson ( Now Is the Time ), Andrea Carter ( Love Slipped Out of the Door ) and Jamie Davis ( Vibe Over Perfection ). In the field of jazz he was involved in 17 recording sessions between 1976 and 2008, according to Tom Lord .
