history

The community of Waldbrunn is largely congruent with the former parish (Cente) Lahr. This was one of the four parishes of the former Amt Ellar. The Office Castellar included next to the parish Lahr nor the Zente Frickhofen, Elsoff and Niederzeuzheim ( Four Centen ). Parish Lahr nor the place Waldersbach belonged to 1815 (today municipality Mengerskirchen) and the deserted villages Wehnaue / Winnau , few-Reynderroytchen, Brotelbach, Brechtelbach, Gralshofen and Oberhof.

The oldest trace of human settlement is a grave of the urn field culture from the late Bronze Age near Fussingen. After the emigration of the Ubier in 38 BC. The area is settled by Usipeters .

In the Frankish times, the office of Ellar with the four cents belonged to the Niederlahngau with the Counts of Diez . In 1337 the Counts of Diez sold the office of Ellar to the Counts of Katzenelnbogen . In 1401 Gerhard Kelner is the first occupied cellar in County Katzenelnbogen in Ellar.

The oldest surviving impression of the seal of the Ellar district court, the forerunner of today's municipal coat of arms, dates from 1491. The district court was dedicated to St. Maximinus. The office of Ellar came to Nassau-Dillenburg in 1557 .

Through an inheritance agreement, the office of Ellar came to Nassau-Hadamar in 1607 . In 1609 the "Greden, Rörichs Johanns Weib" from Ellar in Hadamar was executed as a convicted witch. A plague epidemic raged in Hintermeilingen, Ellar and Lahr in 1614.

The villages of Amt Ellar became Catholic again in 1630. For this purpose, Prince Johann Ludwig von Nassau-Hadamar commissioned the Jesuits. A plague epidemic raged 1636–1637 in the office of Ellar. The village of Obersdorf is dying out completely. Many villages are losing most of their inhabitants. The Jesuit priest Rutger Hesselmann makes a contribution to nursing the sick. He dies of the plague on April 30, 1637. The turmoil of the Thirty Years' War caused considerable damage to the towns. In addition to looting soldiers passing through, the population suffered from a lack of food and multiple epidemics.

In 1736 the villages of Dillhausen , Dorchheim , Dorndorf, Ellar, Fussingen, Frickhofen, Hausen, Hintermeilingen, Mühlbach, Lahr, Langendernbach, Probbach, Waldernbach, Wilsenroth and Winkels rebelled against the war tax imposed on the villages by Prince Christian von Nassau Dillenburg . The uprising, which was put down by soldiers from Dillenburg and Weilburg, went down in the chronicles as the “lace dispute”.

The new office Ellar is founded in 1790 through the reorganization in Orange-Nassau. It included the parishes of Lahr and Frickhofen.

In 1806 the office of Ellar was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Berg . All today's districts of Waldbrunn belong to the Mairie Lahr in the canton of Hadamar . This belongs to the arrondissement of Dillenburg and thus to the department of Sieg . In 1815 the Grand Duchy of Berg is assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia . However, Prussia exchanged the Mairie Lahr for places around Wetzlar with the Duchy of Nassau .

By reorganizing the Duchy of Nassau in 1816, the Office Ellar is combined with the Office Hadamar. After the annexation of the Duchy of Nassau, the places belong to the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1886 the Prussian district and provincial order abolished the Nassau office. The Waldbrunn districts now belong to the Limburg district; Waldernbach is assigned to the Oberlahnkreis .

British bombers dropped seven high explosive bombs on Ellar on August 29, 1941 during World War II. American troops occupied the place on March 27, 1945. The place has been part of the State of Hesse since 1947 . The Catholics of Waldbrunn have been making pilgrimages to the Maria Hilf Beselich pilgrimage chapel for many decades , where they proclaim their faith.

In 1964, the Ellar municipal coat of arms was introduced. As part of the regional reform in Hesse , on December 31, 1970, Ellar and Hintermeilingen merged to form the new municipality of Ellar, and on April 1, 1972, Fussingen, Hausen and Lahr to form the municipality of Waldbrunn. On July 1, 1974, Ellar and Waldbrunn are merged by state law to form today's municipality of Waldbrunn. On January 1, 1977 the place name is officially changed to Waldbrunn (Westerwald).
