Dillhausen is a district of the municipality Mengerskirchen in the central Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg .

geography

Dillhausen is located in the southern Westerwald, about 21 kilometers northeast of Limburg an der Lahn , 11 kilometers northwest of Weilburg and 5 kilometers east of the core town Mengerskirchen on the district roads 450 and 456.

The neighboring places are, starting from the north, clockwise: Obershausen , Niedershausen (both municipality of Löhnberg) and Probbach (municipality of Mengerskirchen ).

The place is surrounded by numerous basalt domes. The sheltered location gives the village a mild low mountain range. The slopes, unsuitable for agriculture, are overgrown with scrub, gorse and coppice.

In 1307 the place was first mentioned as Dilhusen. The patronage of St. Laurentius , however, points to a foundation in the 10th century. The old late Romanesque fortified church , of which only the tower still stands today, together with the adjoining cemetery, formed the center of the settlement.

Dillhausen was a separate parish together with Probbach and Obershausen until the Reformation was introduced in 1534 . With the return to the Catholic faith in 1630, the parish was dissolved and assigned to Mengerskirchen. In 1880 the village received a parish vicar together with Probbach and has been part of the parish "Dillhausen-Probbach" since 1964. The Protestant citizens belong to the parish of Niedershausen. The neo-Romanesque church was built by the villagers at the beginning of the 20th century just outside the village. (Worth mentioning: four bells, the oldest date from 1451 and 1517).

The Sauerbrunnen Waldborn, also known as Sauerborn , is located in a clearing near the village . Above the village, in the seclusion of the forest, there is a chapel , known by the population as the “Holy House”. According to an old oral tradition, it was built on the spot where (not dated) a battle is said to have taken place. One of the survivors built this chapel in gratitude for his salvation, in honor of the Mother of God. Many people from the surrounding villages still make pilgrimages to this chapel.

On December 31, 1970 Dillhausen was incorporated into Mengerskirchen together with Probbach, Waldernbach and Winkels.

The tower of the old fortified church is integrated into the village community center. Today there is a church kindergarten there.

Territorial reform

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , on December 31, 1970, the previously independent communities of Dillhausen, Mengerskirchen, Probbach, Waldernbach and Winkels in the Oberlahnkreis voluntarily merged to form a community called "Mengerskirchen". The district of Mengerskirchen became the seat of the municipal administration.
