Probbach is a part of the municipality Mengerskirchen in the central Hessian district Limburg-Weilburg .
geography
Probbach is located in the southern Westerwald, about 20 kilometers northeast of Limburg an der Lahn , 11 kilometers northwest of Weilburg and 4 kilometers southeast of the core town Mengerskirchen in Hesse on state road 3281.
The neighboring places are, starting from the north, clockwise: Dillhausen (municipality Mengerskirchen), Niedershausen (municipality Löhnberg), Barig-Selbenhausen (municipality Merenberg) and Winkels (municipality Mengerskirchen).
The village is embedded in the basalt hills of the southern slope of the Westerwald. It nestles against the gentle southern slope of the basalt cone "Hermannsberg". Probbach is surrounded all around by deciduous and mixed forest, on the slopes of "Hermannsberg" and "Stein" numerous tree and shrub species grow.
history
Probbach was first mentioned by name in 1299. The spelling (Brachbach, Brathbac, Brachtbach) has changed over the centuries.
The " Sauerborn " mineral fountain is located about 500 meters east of the village . The first documented mention of the medicinal spring as a healing spring dates back to 1459. The use of the "Sauerborn" at that time was limited to personal use and that of the surrounding towns. That changed when Probbach came into the possession of the Prince of Nassau-Dillenburg in 1717 . The prince intended to develop Probbach into a health resort and to let the spring compete with Bad Schwalbach . A first map with the address of the village "Brabacher Heilquelle" dates from the year 1721. The fountain was set in marble and surrounded by an octagonal square. Professor Theodor Philipp Schacht wrote of the versatile healing effects in his fountain pamphlet: "The Probbacher Sauerbrunnen helps with periodic head pressure, palpitations, asthma, coughs and jaundice. The healing water is also effective for diseases of the liver, spleen and glands. They are worst careful of their health, who drink hastily and violently. "
At that time, the main customers were the cities of Wetzlar and Weilburg . However, sales were gradually discontinued because the well was insufficiently productive in terms of quantity. Today the Sauerborn is particularly popular in the summer months. Visitors come to either drink the healthy mineral water on the spot or to take it home in bottles.
The St. Michaelis Church was built in 1873 from local materials (basalt, lung stone and clinker) in the neo-Romanesque style. The westwork-like entrance tower is a typical addition from 1951 (the front of the church had become dilapidated). The rich ornamental and figurative interior decoration in the style of Art Nouveau, laid out 1901–1903 under the direction of the painter Heinerich Sebastian, is next to the numerous representations of symbols (including 7 sacraments, 4 evangelists, offerings of Melchizedech and mass offerings) and events from biblical history (including the birth of Jesus, death on the cross) also a Madonna and Child from the 15th century is worth seeing, as is the round image of the Trinity from the old chapel (18th century). In 1977 the church was extensively renovated. Ornaments that were partially painted over during a renovation in the 1950s were exposed again.
The Vikariehaus in Probbach was financed through a collection campaign with a princely begging license and built in 1698. It served as the school house, the vicar's residence and the teachers' residence. For centuries it was the largest and most beautiful (half-timbered) house in the village. In the 20th century it lost its importance, but it remained the official seat of the mayor until 1970. From 2002 it was extensively renovated and is now the seat of the Alois Becker library, the reading library for local history and the historical archive of the market town Mengerskirchen. There is an exhibition space for art, meeting rooms for clubs and political bodies, as well as space for family celebrations.
In the 1960s, a weekend construction area was built on Hermannsberg. The designation of new residential areas outside the old town center has developed so strongly in the past decades that a seamless transition from the weekend area, which has since been rezoned, into the residential area has been achieved. The old elementary school was converted into a community center in 1980 - after the primary school was moved to Mengerskirchen. On the ground floor there is a youth room and a branch of the Mengerskirchen community administration. In October 1975 the "Waldsee" between Probbach and Winkels was completed. It was initially planned as a "rain retention measure" for the Faulbach (during floods the Faulbach had often flooded the houses on the creek). Surrounded by forest, the lake is valued by many as an idyllic place for relaxation (swimming pool) and leisure (including fishing).
Territorial reform
In the course of administrative reform in Hesse Probbach was on 31 December 1970, the previously independent communities Mengerskirchen, Dillhausen, Waldersbach and angle on a voluntary basis the new municipality "Mengerskirchen" together . Mengerskirchen became the seat of the municipal administration.
