Church in Winkels (built 1880)

Winkels is a part of the municipality Mengerskirchen in the central Hessian district Limburg-Weilburg with about 950 inhabitants.

Geographical location

The place is at the foot of the Westerwald not far from the Lahn in a valley, embedded by forests and bare basalt mountains on the connecting road from Weilburg to Rennerod .

history

The map of the topographical survey of the Rhineland on the angle is recorded

Winkels was first mentioned in a document in 1237 as Winkelsece . Eigenberg Castle (popularly known as Maienburg ) was built in the village market . In 1331 it became a knight seat of the feudal men of Mudersbach. On the orders of the sovereign, the people of Winkels performed manual and clamping services for the Mudersbachers.

For centuries the residents had to visit the parish church in neighboring Mengerskirchen . In 1879 the construction of a small church began, which was named "Chapel Strieder" after Mayor Strieder and was completed in 1880. In 1947 this was expanded and is now called the Birth of Mary .

Agriculture on the poor soils of the Westerwald was arduous and the village population lived in great poverty. It was not until the beginning of industrialization in the second half of the 19th century that some of the people found work. Most of the people from Winkels moved to Westphalia , Siegerland and Bergisch as building craftsmen in early spring to earn a living there. Women, children and the elderly worked the soil. In the long winter months one occupied himself with home work. The professions of sieve maker, basket maker and potter were widespread. There were two distilleries.

After the Second World War , a huge structural change took place . Since around the mid-1950s, people have been doing without part-time jobs in small farms. The majority of the population now commutes to the cities of Weilburg , Limburg , Wetzlar , Wiesbaden and Frankfurt . A number of men and women have also found work in two local clay pits, small factories and industrial plants in the near and far vicinity.

Winkels celebrated its 750th anniversary in 1987.

Territorial reform

Since January 1, 1971, Winkels, like the former communities of Dillhausen , Mengerskirchen, Probbach and Waldernbach , has been part of the large community of Mengerskirchen that was newly formed on a voluntary basis as part of the regional reform in Hesse . The municipality belonged to the Oberlahnkreis until April 1, 1974, when the Limburg-Weilburg district was founded, in which the Oberlahnkreis was merged.
