Manfred Wegscheider

Manfred Wegscheider (born August 3, 1949 in Kapfenberg ) is an Austrian state politician of the SPÖ . He was President of the Landtag of Styria from October 2010 to December 2012 and, with interruptions, Mayor of Kapfenberg from 1999 to 2017 .

education and profession

Wegscheider attended elementary school between 1955 and 1959 and then secondary school from 1959 to 1963. He then completed the HTBL for mechanical engineering in Kapfenberg between 1963 and 1968 . From 1969 to 1970 he worked as an assistant in the rolling mill of the Pengg company and then from 1970 to 2000 he was department head for quality assurance at Böhler in Kapfenberg.

Politics and functions

Wegscheider began his political career between 1975 and 1979 as a local councilor in Thörl . In 1979 he also became the education and culture officer of the Redfeld / Kapfenberg section and in 1985 he became a local councilor in Kapfenberg. In 1989 he took over the role of city councilor for municipal utilities and rose to become vice mayor in Kapfenberg in 1995. Wegscheider was mayor of Kapfenberg for the first time from December 16, 1999 to October 24, 2005 . From October 25, 2005 to October 21, 2010 he was in the state government of Voves I, State Councilor for Sport, Environment and Renewable Energy in Styria . He was elected President of the Landtag of Styria on October 21, 2010 , and held this position until December 14, 2012. On December 13th he was re-elected Mayor of Kapfenberg. His term of office as mayor ended on December 31, 2014 when the municipal council was dissolved due to the merger of Kapfenberg and Parschlug . He was then appointed government commissioner of the merged municipality and after the municipal council elections on March 22nd, 2015, he was again elected mayor of Kapfenberg on April 22nd. In June 2017, he surprisingly resigned as mayor.
