Barbara Gross (born August 30, 1953 in Graz ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). Gross was a member of the Styrian state parliament from 1989 and its third president from 2005 to 2010. She has been President of Volkshilfe Steiermark since 1994, and in 2015 she was elected President of Volkshilfe Austria .

Life

After completing elementary and secondary school, Gross attended a commercial academy, which she had to drop out at the age of 15 because her mother had died and she now had to look after her four younger siblings. She joined Merkur Versicherung in 1970 and became a member of the SPÖ that same year. As a result, Gross became involved in the works council, became chairwoman of the central works council and chairwoman of the ÖGB Graz-Umgebung . Within the party, she was subsequently elected to the board of the SPÖ Graz and the state party executive. Gross has represented the SPÖ in the Styrian Landtag since January 24, 1989, and was elected third President of the Landtag on October 25, 2005. She was also deputy federal women chairwoman, state women chairwoman and deputy state party chairwoman.

Barbara Gross has been President of Volkshilfe Steiermark since 1994. On May 29, 2015, she was elected chairwoman of Volkshilfe Österreich by the federal conference, and Ewald Sacher succeeded her in this position in May 2019 .

Gross was married to the SPÖ party chairman Hans Gross .
