The Merkur Versicherung AG is an Austrian insurance company headquartered in Graz . The core competence lies in the area of private health insurance . In addition to Austria, Southeast Europe is an important market in which Merkur Versicherung is actively represented with subsidiaries.
Under the motto “preventive care instead of healing”, Merkur Versicherung stands for competence in the area of preventive maintenance of the quality of life. The wide range of preventive services, mostly developed by the subsidiary Merkur Lifestyle GmbH, ranges from tailor-made training in fitness studios, wellness treatments in high-quality partner hotels and high-tech early detection checks in leading private clinics to sports camps for children.

Merkur Versicherung AG reported solid premium development for 2018. The earned premiums across all categories amount to 493.7 million euros (Austria) and, with an increase of 5.1 percent, are following on from the previous year's growth. The number of insured risks on the 2018 balance sheet date was 1,004,391 risks (Austria).
The premium volume in the entire Merkur Group increased by 1.7 percent to 582.8 million euros - 15.7 percent of this is attributable to the Merkur insurance subsidiaries in Southeastern Europe. The number of risks in the group as a whole is 1,447,069. Overall, the group as a whole recorded positive pre-tax profit (EGT) of 9.8 million euros on the balance sheet date.

history
In 1798 the forerunner institute, the "Institute for the Support of Poor, Sick, Duty Unemployed, old age and infirmities due to clerks who had become incapable of serving in Grätz" was founded as an association in Graz . The aim was to promote health care for those named in the name. In 1848 it was renamed "Handelsdiener -versorgung-Verein in Graz".
With the further renaming in 1866 to "Commercial Supply Association" an expansion of the group of beneficiaries followed. Now the merchants themselves and not only their employees are benefited. In 1891 the association merged with the "Gremialkrankenkasse" and covered both compulsory and private insurance. In 1928 a hospital of the association was opened in Graz.
When Austria was annexed in 1938, it was converted into the legal form of a mutual insurance company. Two years later the company was renamed "Südmark - Mutual Health Insurance Institution". After the end of the war, the name was last renamed "Merkur". In 1992, the Association of Merchants became an insurance company. Merkur Versicherung has also been active abroad since 1992. The first expansion took place in Slovenia.
In autumn 2004, Merkur Versicherung presented a milestone in the insurance industry with the "Merkur Privatklasse", which is still a characteristic feature of the company today. Two years later, the brand was rebranded with even greater emphasis on the precautionary idea (Merkur Die Vorsicherung).
After 125 years, the group headquarters at Graz Joanneumring 22 (formerly Neutorgasse 57) is being replaced. From spring 2020 the new Merkur general management will be located at Conrad-von-Hötzendorf-Straße 84. The modern office building also houses a restaurant and fitness studio, both of which are open to external visitors. Austrian chef Konstantin Filippou takes over the catering .
