history

Coat of arms of the knight v. Tiefenbach (after Siebmacher-Göckingk)
Monument to Gottfried von Beselich in front of the church in Obertiefenbach

Obertiefenbach was probably built in the 7th / 8th centuries. Century. The occurrence of humans has already been documented in the distant past by finds in the ground. However, there is no evidence of an exact age. Obertiefenbach was first mentioned in history in 1234. Around this time the noble Hesse family lived there, of which the knight Heinrich Hesse is historically mentioned. In the Middle Ages, the parish of Obertiefenbach, which has been independent since 1347, belonged to the Archdeaconate of Dietkirchen on the right bank of the Rhine in the Archdiocese of Trier. On February 1, 1376, Obertiefenbach was given by the Count of Diez as a pledge in Mannslehen to the brothers Dietrich and Siegfried von Runkel.

Around 1500, 100 families lived in the village, the number of which was greatly reduced by the plague between 1551 and 1598. Due to the Reformation , the inhabitants of Obertiefenbach were evangelically reformed in 1580 . In 1587 the Counts of Wied had the right of patronage. In 1604 the place had 53 families with and 20 people without land. The entire village, consisting of 34 houses and 30 barns, was destroyed in a fire in 1638. At the end of the Thirty Years' War in 1648, only 13 families lived in the village. On June 21, 1649, the County of Runkel pledged the parish village to Prince Johann Ludwig von Nassau-Hadamar . The population became Catholic again after a break of about 90 years. Obertiefenbach was the prince's private property and did not belong to the principality . When the Hadamar Princely House died out in 1711, the village of Obertiefenbach fell to the daughter descendants Merode-Westerloo and Salm-Salm .

A new church was built in Obertiefenbach in 1733. On September 8, 1767, after three years of construction, the pilgrimage chapel "Maria Hilf" was inaugurated on the Beselicher Kopf. The Counts of Wied-Runkel acquired the place from Merode-Westerloo and Salm-Salm back in 1771 and 1774. In 1795, during the first coalition war, a battle between the Austrians and the French took place on a field in Obertiefenbach . The Austrians were able to fight back the French and quartered themselves in Obertiefenbach for a long time. In the course of this war there were alternating conquests in the area on the Lahn, with the French division general François-Joseph Lefebvre and three other generals setting up his headquarters in this place . In 1796 a military hospital was set up in the school because of the fighting in the immediate vicinity . War damage amounting to 36080 guilders was incurred for the community of Obertiefenbach between 1795 and 1797 . From 1806 the place was part of the Duchy of Nassau , which was annexed by Prussia in 1866 . On November 1, 1813, the Russian troops allied with Prussians and Austrians, following the final withdrawal of the French under Napoleon , entered Obertiefenbach. The inventory of the village, drawn up in 1816, reports 41 leather and 100 straw community buckets that were kept in the church tower . The course of the Long Meil was changed in 1816 to today's approximately eight kilometers of almost perfectly straight roads on federal highway 49 between Limburg and Obertiefenbach. This then newly created section was aligned with the top of the steeple of the Church of St. Agidius von Obertiefenbach.

A running well was created in 1820 as a cattle trough. Under canon law, Obertiefenbach has belonged to the Limburg diocese since it was founded on November 23, 1827. Today's cemetery was laid out on the way to Oberweyer in 1835 . Due to the German Revolution , a mayor was elected head of the village for the first time in 1848 . The building next to the church, in which a pizzeria is located, was inaugurated as the town hall in 1849. In the campaign of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, 52 men from the village took part, one of whom fell and five others were wounded. In the first half of the 19th century, the six communities Heckholzhausen, Obertiefenbach, Gaudernbach , Wirbelau , Eschenau and Schupbach formed a fire fighting district. When a fire broke out, certain residents with four harnessed horses had to fetch the fire engine stationed in Schupbach immediately . At the beginning of 1880, the Obertiefenbach volunteer fire brigade was founded. As a result, she and the two volunteer fire brigades Weilburg and Braunfels formed the Oberlahn fire fighting district in the fire service association for the Wiesbaden district , within which they celebrated their association festival for the first time on August 3, 1890 in Obertiefenbach. The large school building with schoolyard was built in the center of the village in 1872/73 and the rectory next to the church in 1875. The church from 1733 was demolished in 1884 due to construction defects and capacity reasons, but the church tower was retained. The current neo-Gothic church was built between 1885 and 1888.

In the First World War were 32 men from Obertiefenbach. On September 6, 1917, the first Pallottine Sisters came to Obertiefenbach, and from June 3, 1918 they ran the first kindergarten on Bäckergasse. Electric lamps burned from June 21, 1923. In spring 1927, the first water supply line followed , supplying almost 800 households. The inauguration of the newly built sister house of the Pallottine Sisters in Auer Weg took place on August 15, 1932. The fire station in Georg-Wagner-Strasse was completed in spring 1935.

Obertiefenbach had many victims in the Second World War . 56 soldiers fell and 36 went missing.

On June 20, 1945, Alois Borbonus was appointed mayor of the US occupation forces and was later elected by the local council. In 1946 the community of Obertiefenbach accommodated nearly 500 displaced persons, mainly from the Sudetenland , so that the population rose to 1707 in 1961. Alfred Roth was first elected mayor in 1962. He was in office until 1986 and after the merger in May 1971 became mayor of the newly created municipality of Beselich.

The first Obertiefenbach carnival parade took place on Shrovetide Sunday in 1958. The village infrastructure was expanded in the following years. In 1963 the sewage treatment plant was put into operation and the new sports field was inaugurated at Pentecost, the multi-purpose hall in 1964 and the cemetery hall inaugurated in 1968. Georg Leber became an honorary citizen of Obertiefenbach in 1969 .

Obertiefenbach as a district of Beselich

The municipality of Obertiefenbach merged on December 31, 1970 as part of the regional reform in Hesse with the previously independent municipalities of Heckholzhausen , Niedertiefenbach and Schupbach (all in the former Oberlahnkreis ) to form the municipality of Beselich . It was named after the Beselich monastery . Local districts according to the Hessian municipal code were not established. On July 1, 1974, Obertiefenbach was assigned as a district of Beselichs by merging the Oberlahnkreis with the Limburg district of the new Limburg-Weilburg district .

Buildings

Catholic parish church “St. Egidius ”to Obertiefenbach

Catholic parish church of St. Giles

Around 1200, the first stone-built church was built. The baroque church, built in 1733 on the Kirchberg, was closed in 1884 due to construction defects and for reasons of capacity and replaced between 1885 and 1888 by the new building of the current neo-Gothic church, which was inaugurated on September 1, 1888. The architect was Max Meckel, diocesan master builder of the Limburg diocese from 1887 to 1892. Only the 54 meter high church tower remained . The nave was rotated 90 degrees. The church is the Sant'Egidio dedicated and belonged to Kath. Parish of St. Giles and since the beginning of 2020 it belongs to the Church of St. John Nepomuk Hadamar. The rectory right next to the church was rebuilt in 1875.

Old school

The old, listed school building was built in the town center in 1872/73 and handed over to its intended use on October 15, 1873. At the end of the 1982/83 school year, school operations in the center of the town ended on June 22, 1983. On August 4, 1983, the Obertiefenbach school children and the other Beselich pupils moved into the newly built Beselich primary school on Schupbacher Strasse. The Catholic parish of St. Agidius was able to acquire the building from the municipality of Beselich on October 3, 1985. During the extensive voluntary remodeling and renovation work, old documents and other items were found when removing the paneling in a classroom. In a document, seven schoolboys had recorded their confession as loyal supporters of the Catholic Church and their bishop Peter Joseph Blum during the time of the Kulturkampf on June 16, 1874 and also left other documents. These historical documents of the students give the school building an unmistakable historical meaning. The cultural monument is now used as a parish home for various church groups. In this building the Catholic public library and since March 14, 1998 the Obertiefenbacher Heimatstube have been operated by the Catholic men's work .

The interior of the chapel was renovated in 2002 through donations from the population and with the support of the Limburg diocese and most of it was restored to its original state.
