The Beselicher head is 296  m above sea level. NHN high elevation on the northeastern edge of the Limburg basin in the center of the municipality of Beselich and also in the Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg in Hesse .

The name comes from the Premonstratensian monastery of Beselich, which was founded there around 1170 . The three-aisled basilica of the monastery was built between 1170 and 1230, and has been restored today as a listed ruin. The buildings of the former monastery courtyard (Beselicher Hof), which is still used for agricultural purposes, are still preserved. The Catholic pilgrimage chapel “Maria Hilf” was built near the monastery ruins from 1764 to 1767 . In the vernacular, both the Beselicher head and the Beselich pilgrimage chapel are simply referred to as “Beselich”.

geography

The Beselicher head has a dome shape with a plateau and at 296 m is the highest point in the municipality of Beselich on the edge of the Limburg basin . It is located about eight kilometers northeast of the district town of Limburg an der Lahn , between the towns of Obertiefenbach , Niedertiefenbach and Schupbach . The boundary between Niederbach and Obertiefenbach runs at the highest point. The Beselicher Kopf is in a scenic location in the central location of this municipality, to which it owes its name when it was founded on December 30, 1970 through the merger of four formerly independent municipalities.

The elevation can be reached via the access roads from the state road L 3322 between the Obertiefenbach and Schupbach districts of Beselich and the K460 district road between Niedertiefenbach and Schupbach. In addition, the Beselicher Kopf can be hiked on foot from Obertiefenbach over the Betweg past the seven chapels or from Niedertiefenbach over the Beselicher path.

geology

The Beselicher head consists mainly of olivine basalt of volcanic origin. Except for the eastern grassy area, its slopes are continuously covered by mixed forest.

Beginning in the 19th century until the beginning of the Second World War , basalt was mined on a large scale in quarries in the forest on this Beselicher Berg and mainly processed into paving stones. The “Klopfsteinmühle” built on the Beselicher Kopf testifies to this time, and after it was closed in 1912, it fell into ruin.

height

The Beselicher Kopf reaches a height of up to 296 meters and towers over the surrounding villages with a good view of the Merenberger and Weilburger Land, as well as the Limburg Basin.

history

Beselich monastery ruins
Catholic pilgrimage chapel “Maria Hilf” in Beselich

The history has been shaped for centuries by the Beselich monastery and the pilgrimage chapel “Maria Hilf” Beselich. The historical Beselicher market took place on the Beselicher Kopf for the first time in 1985 to commemorate the fair, which in the late Middle Ages was always held on July 15th, the Twelve Lord's Day , in front of the Premonstratensian monastery. This market, which takes place every two years, was held for the last time in July 2013 under the leadership of the Niedertiefenbach Home and Improvement Association. The last major anniversary celebrations for the 850th anniversary of the founding of the monastery in June 2013 and for the 250th anniversary of the pilgrimage chapel in September 2017 took place at a historic location on the plateau of the Beselicher Kopf.
