Niedertiefenbach is the smallest of the four districts of the municipality of Beselich in the Limburg-Weilburg district in central Hesse . The place has around 1000 inhabitants.

geography

Niedertiefenbach is located on the northeastern edge of the Limburg basin , on the edge of the Lahn valley and on the southeast slope of the Westerwald in central Hesse . The Beselicher Kopf (296 m), which rises north of the village, is visible from afar . On it are the ruins of the monastery after which the entire community is named. Niedertiefenbach is centrally located in the Limburg-Weilburg district in the valley of the Tiefenbach, which flows from north to south . The place is located around 1.5 kilometers southwest of the administrative center Obertiefenbach and around 7.5 kilometers northeast of the district town of Limburg an der Lahn .

The district borders on Obertiefenbach in the north and Schupbach in the east (both districts of Beselicher). Eschenau , Hofen , Steeden and Dehrn connect from the southeast to the southwest (all districts of Runkel ).

The area around the village is only slightly cut by the valley of the Tiefenbach and apart from that there are few differences in altitude. To the west of the place stretches an almost completely flat plain, to the east a slightly raised ridge stretches in a north-south direction. Only north and northeast of the village does the terrain of the Beselicher Kopf rise significantly. The place itself is about 200 meters above sea level. At the western and southern boundary of the district, the landscape drops down to 193 meters. The highest point is the Beselicher Kopf at 296 meters.

The Niedertiefenbach district consists for the most part of agricultural land. Especially the western part of the district consists almost exclusively of arable land. The place itself is surrounded by a small piece of forest in the north, east and south. The Tiefenbach feeds a small reservoir south of the village . This is followed by a larger swampy area in the south. In addition, limestone quarries shape the landscape, which are mostly located in the Steedener district and feed the local lime works , with their edges protrude into the Niedertiefenbach district in the south.

history

Oldest house in town

The first traces of settlement are attested by the discovery of a 4,000-year-old stone box grave in 1846 near the district boundary to Steeden.

A deed of donation from 1003 proves that the village of Niedertiefenbach already existed around the turn of the millennium. The Counts of Katzenelnbogen maintained a bailiwick in Niedertiefenbach around 1103 . In 1349 the plague raged heavily in the village. Accommodation for the dying was built in the field in the direction of Dehrn. The area is still referred to as “little monastery” even though it was not a monastery.

In 1564 the Reformation was introduced in Niedertiefenbach. In 1630 it returned to the Catholic denomination. In 1851 the town's chapel became the seat of its own parish. The present church was consecrated in 1872.

In the first half of the 19th century, several communities, including Niedertiefenbach, formed a fire fighting district. When a fire broke out, certain residents with harnessed horses had to fetch the fire engine stationed in Hofen immediately. At the beginning of 1934, the Niedertiefenbach volunteer fire brigade was founded . She was admitted to the Nassau Fire Brigade Association on February 1st of the same year with a certificate of admission . In June 2009 the Niedertiefenbach fire brigade celebrated its 75th anniversary party under the patronage of the district fire brigade association chairman Franz-Josef Sehr. In 1974 it was given a multi-purpose hall, which was extensively renovated in 2002 and has since been run as a community center.

Territorial reform

The municipality Niedertiefenbach merged on 31 December 1970 at the course of municipal reform in Hesse with the previously independent municipalities Heckholzhausen , Obertiefenbach and Schupbach (all in the former Oberlahnkreis ) voluntarily community Beselich . It was named after the Beselich monastery . Local districts according to the Hessian municipal code were not established.
