The church of St. Egidius is the landmark of the Obertiefenbach district of the Hessian municipality of Beselich in the Limburg-Weilburg district . She was by the end of 2019 owned by the Catholic parish of St. Giles Beselich-Obertiefenbach in the diocese Limburg . Since the beginning of 2020 she has been part of the parish of St. Johannes Nepomuk Hadamar.

Geographical location

Obertiefenbach is located on the northeastern edge of the Limburg basin , on the edge of the Lahn valley and on the southeastern slope of the Westerwald 220 m above sea level in Central Hesse . The Beselicher Kopf (296 m) with the pilgrimage chapel “Maria Hilf” and the ruins of the Beselich monastery , which stands on the northeastern side of the district , can be seen from afar . Obertiefenbach is located in the valley of the Tiefenbach, centrally in the Limburg-Weilburg district (Central Hesse). The church is located in the center of the village in the street "An der Kirche" on the Kirchberg. The new street layout of the Long Meil ( Bundesstrasse 49 ), which took place in 1816, was aligned with the top of its church tower , which can be seen from afar . The rectory right next to the church was rebuilt in 1875.

Buildings and equipment

Catholic Church "St. Giles", interior view

This neo-Gothic church, consecrated on September 1, 1888, replaces the baroque church built on the Kirchberg in 1733 and closed down in 1884 due to construction defects and capacity reasons. The architect was Max Meckel , diocesan master builder of the Limburg diocese from 1887 to 1892. Only the 54 meter high church tower remained . The nave was rotated 90 degrees. The three-aisled church in the form of a brick building is consecrated to St. Aegidius and is richly structured: the main portal with a large gallery window forms the festive facade. At the side entrance on the street side there is a large side window, which gives the impression of the layout of a transept. On the south side, three choirs with windows enliven the exterior image, which is crowned by the dominating church tower with the extremely delicate spire. On the inside of the tower side, an additional gallery with a fresco of a scene from the life of the patron saint St. Aegidius corresponds to the large window above the left side entrance.

The pillars and vaults in the three choirs (main, Marien and Joseph altar) can be found as early as the High Gothic period. The Gothic vaulted ceiling space is supported by 10 free-standing columns, each starting on a square foot. As the square becomes narrower, it jumps into an octagon. In the height, the columns unfold to form hexagonal capitals, they support the branches of the vault ribs. The ribs are angular and painted red; the stone limbs are indicated by white cross lines. The dynamic inherent in the room leads the view forward to the colorful, light-giving windows in the main and side choirs with the three significant altars.

Main altar

The main altar gives a vivid, silent sermon: it symbolizes the good news of the gospel based on the four great prophets of the Old Covenant - Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel. The redeeming death of Christ is the silent proclamation of the left altar panel. The completion of redemption in Christ's victory over the power of death is illustrated in the right altar panel. The tower-like structure with a figure of the risen Christ, who formed the end of the scene, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension, no longer exists. The choirs of angels in the crowning ornamentation above the altarpieces praise God with their musical instruments.

Mary Altar

The Marien altar is in the left choir. There the artist depicted the direct ancestors of the Redeemer with little John the Baptist. A dove hovers overhead - it is a sign of the constant work of the Holy Spirit . The Annunciation is depicted on the left side wing. The right wing shows Mary kneeling with a book, listening to what God wants to tell her. The pierced, thorn-crowned heart of the Savior is painted on the pedestal as a summary of the entire history of salvation. During the Christmas season, the nativity scene is set up in the choir of the Marien Altar.

Joseph Altar

The main picture of the Joseph altar in the right choir shows how the believing Joseph, blessed by Jesus and cared for by Mary, ends his life devoutly on his deathbed. The other four pictures show the engagement of Mary and Joseph, the flight to Egypt, the birth of Christ and the twelve-year-old Jesus interpreting the writings of the Old Testament before the scholars in the temple of Jerusalem. In front of this choir is the black marble in the year Baptismal font made in 1718 , the metal lid (with the symbols of fish and pigeon) from 1956.

Way of the Cross and Pietà

The suffering of Christ is depicted in the 14 stations of the cross on the side walls of the church. In a niche in front of the Marien Altar there is a Pietà and below it the tomb of Jesus, which is only open from Good Friday to Easter Vigil.

Church window

The morning light lets all the choir windows shine in full splendor. At the highest point they show God as ruler, whom the angels worship, in the midst of the saints - the fourteen helpers in need are represented as saints from every class . The middle side choirs are dedicated to the Mother of God Mary and the foster father of Jesus, St. Joseph . All the other windows of the church are without figurative representations. The edges are yellow to golden yellow on both sides. The upper and lower ends are made up of modern, abstractly alienated tassels, turrets and flowers in all shades of blue, in red and yellow-green. The entire window area is divided into small triangular fields held together by lead bands. In the large gallery window above the main gallery, the colors red and blue predominate; it is a fine example of ornamental glass mosaic.

Baptistery

At the rear right side entrance is the baptistery with the stone baptismal font in the middle (now in front of the Joseph's altar). The windows, decorated in neo-Gothic stained glass, show the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan very impressively .

organ

Today's organ in the main gallery replaced the old organ installed on August 31, 1887 by the Würzburg organ manufacturer Schlimbach. The organ Opus 4758 of the Ludwigsburg company Walcker was intoned by the organ builder Heinze and inaugurated on January 30, 1966. It has 33 registers , which are distributed over two manuals and pedal . The disposition is as follows:

The life of the parish is supported by the women's community with the groups “St. Elisabeth "," St. Rita "and" St. Christina ”as well as by the Catholic public library that has existed since October 2, 1959. The Catholic men's work, founded on October 27, 1959, has been operating the Obertiefenbacher Heimatstube since March 14, 1998 .
