Synagogue (Westerburg)
The synagogue in Westerburg , a town in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1910 and is located at Wilhelmstrasse 4 / Schaumgasse.
history
The Jewish community initially had a prayer room in a Jewish private house, until a synagogue was built. This was inaugurated in 1824 at the latest and had 53 places for men and 34 for women.
Since the synagogue was dilapidated at the beginning of the 20th century , the Jewish community of Westerburg decided to build a new building on the same site. In 1910 the new synagogue was inaugurated by the district rabbi Landau from Weilburg .
National Socialist Persecution
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the windows and interior furnishings of the synagogue were destroyed. The Jewish community was forced to have the repairs carried out at their own expense and had to sell the synagogue to the city of Westerburg on March 25, 1939.
Current condition
After 1945, the building was sold to private individuals who converted it into a residential building. The arched windows and the oculi to the left and right of the entrance are a reminder of the building's past.
