action
The American Eric Erickson lives in Sweden in 1942 and has taken citizenship there. The merchant is blacklisted by the Allies because he sold oil to the Germans. Collins, a British secret service officer, visits him and explains to him that if he gave the Allies information about his trips to Germany, his name would be cleared after the war. Erickson realizes that he has no other option and accepts.
Erickson pretends to be a friend of National Socialism among the German authorities . Although he is increasing in the respect of the Germans, his wife Ingrid leaves him, his friends and previous business partners despise him. On a trip to Berlin, he met Marianne Mollendorf. She becomes his partner and lover. The Germans want to build an oil refinery in neutral Sweden in order to be supplied with oil from there. Erickson determines the exact location of the planned construction and transmits the data to Collins. Now Erickson falls under suspicion of espionage among the Germans. The Gestapo also determines that Marianne is spying for the Allies. She is put in a prison in Berlin-Moabit , in which Erickson is also imprisoned. He has to watch the execution of Marianne from his cell window. His shock at the realization that Marianne was a spy leads the Germans to believe in his innocence.
Shortly after his release, Erickson is incriminated by a 12-year-old Hitler Youth , the son of a business friend. With the help of a German underground movement, he was able to flee to Denmark . From there he is brought to Sweden in a fishing boat. He is met by Collins and Max Gumpel, his only remaining friend who never believed in Erickson's collaboration .
