action

The first symptoms appear on a Greek freighter anchored off New York. The otherwise grumpy sailors fall into the euphoria caused by a virus transmitted by a toucan . The bird is said to be in quarantine , but escapes and flies to the East Village , where Liz and Pete live with a group of hippies. Liz stays immune; but Pete is infected. He immediately infects his cronies, who, previously succumbing to the philosophy of absolute hopelessness, now remain in a state of well-being. The epidemic of luck spreads, threatens to seize all of New York. The road users no longer yell at each other; the couples stop bickering. The divorce numbers are falling, the lovers are queuing in front of the registry offices. People stop their vices like smoking and drinking; the state threatens to go bankrupt if the tax losses .

Washington steps in. Protective masks are distributed. That is where the antidote is found. The problem with Pete is reverting to the bearded and grumpy figure he used to be.

criticism

"An original, romantic comedy that doesn't quite hold out its fresh staging style."

"The useful idea was not used properly, so only average funny entertainment."

“The satire goes down a bit because director George Seaton lets the bird in question speak like a comic strip. Still worth seeing, among other things because of George Furth's performance as the right-hand man of Dom DeLuises politician and a cameo by Thelma Ritter. "
