Palazzo Bevilacqua

The Palazzo Bevilacqua in Verona is the work of the Italian Renaissance architect Michele Sanmicheli . The palazzo stands in the center of the northern Italian city of Verona and was designed around 1534.

Building history

The Bevilacqua family was one of the most influential families in Verona, but did not have a representative city palace until the 1530s. A few years earlier (around 1527) Michele Sanmicheli had begun the design and construction of the Palazzo Canossa ; the Palazzo Bevilacqua and the Palazzo Pompei followed a few years later.

architecture

While the ground floor of the palace with its rusticated stones looks rather squat and from the outside is more reminiscent of a trade or business office, the upper floor ( piano nobile ) has an extremely representative architecture on the basis of a triumphal arch scheme , which is here - for the first time in architectural history - experiences a ranking. To compensate for the difference in height, there are skylights above the small window arches. The balcony parapets, the presented columns and the rich design of the architrave also contribute to the representative character of the upper floor. The windows on the ground floor are - in contrast to the upper floor - all of the same size; the difference is compensated for by blind arches .

function

The palace served as the town residence of the Bevilacqua family, who also housed statues of antiquities and pictures by famous Italian painters, who later found their way into various museums in Italy and France; among them were u. a. the Pietà with the tear by Giovanni Francesco Caroto , the paradise by Tintoretto and a Maria with child by Paolo Veronese .
