Giovanni Francesco Caroto (* around 1480 in Verona ; † 1555 there ) was an Italian painter .

Life

Caroto was a student of the Liberal of Verona and Andrea Mantegna , whose style determined his youthful works. From 1508 onwards, the painting style of the Veronese school regained the upper hand, only to gradually give way to that of Giulio Romano and the Venetians.

His oil paintings are numerous, especially in the galleries of Verona, Modena and Mantua .

As a fresco painter, he did the best in the cycle from the Tobias legend in the Spolocrini Chapel at Chiesa di Santa Eufemia in Verona.
