The yard

The Palazzo Pompei is the last of three Renaissance palaces designed by the Italian architect Michele Sanmicheli in Verona . The palazzo stands on the banks of the Adige in the center of the northern Italian city and was built between 1535 and 1540.

Building history

The palace was designed for the noble Lavezzola family , who sold the building to the Pompei family in 1579 ; this was in his possession for over 200 years. In 1833 the owners donated the Palazzo to the city of Verona, which later also acquired the neighboring building ( Palazzo Carlotti ). At the turn of the 20th century, the buildings were extensively renovated; the interior has since housed a museum of natural history ( Museo civico di storia naturale ).

architecture

While the ground floor of the palace with its rusticated stones looks rather squat and from the outside is more reminiscent of a trading or business office, a much more open and representative architecture unfolds on the upper floor ( piano nobile ): seven equally large arched windows that reach down to the floor open up small balconies, which are separated from each other by stone plinths with resting fluted half-columns . Half-human, half-animal grimaces can be found over the windows. The architrave above is adorned with a metope triglyph frieze. The middle part of the facade with the slightly raised main portal is slightly wider than the side parts.
