Michele Sanmicheli
Michele Sanmicheli (* 1484 in Verona , † 1559 ) was an architect of the late Renaissance and next to Antonio da Sangallo. J. the most important fortress builder of his time.
Life
Sanmicheli learned from Donato Bramante in Rome and was inspired by him in his work. But the buildings of the 15 years younger builder Giulio Romano had a strong influence on him, especially his early Mantuan masterpiece, the Palazzo del Te . Soon he entered the service of the Vatican and worked there for a long time. In 1528 he entered the service of the Republic of Venice , enlarged and improved almost all of its fortifications and had the Lido fortified for the first time (1535–1549). In Verona he provided the old city walls with imposing gates, including the Porta Nuova . There he also built the palaces Bevilacqua and Pompei , in Venice the Palazzo Grimani . The church of Madonna di Campagna in Verona, for which he had delivered the plans, was not built until after his death, as was the little-noticed fortress of San Andrea in the port entrance of Venice.
Sanmicheli buildings were formative for the powerful style of Veronese palaces in the style of Mannerist classicism with coarse rustication -masonry on the ground floor and another Mannerist elements that give the structures strength and plasticity. He fundamentally changed the cityscape of his hometown.
