Stefan Schnabel

Stefan Schnabel (born February 2, 1912 in Berlin ; † March 11, 1999 in Rogaro / Tremezzo ) was a German actor .

The son of the pianist Artur Schnabel and the singer Therese Behr-Schnabel emigrated with his parents from Berlin to Italy after the Nazis came to power in 1933. In the same year he went to London , where he found his first employment at the Old Vic Theater as a wind noise maker for a performance of The Storm .

Soon after, he made a name for himself as an actor here, starring in various Shakespeare classics such as Macbeth , As You Like It and King Lear, as well as plays by other authors. In 1937 he moved to the USA and in the same year operated in Los Angeles and New York City .

He now began as a radio play speaker and was involved in the famous War of the Worlds by Orson Welles in 1938 . In total, Schnabel took part in around 5,000 radio broadcasts. He came to Hollywood through Welles and began his acting career there in 1943.

Schnabel played in various American productions at irregular intervals over the following decades. Occasionally he was also in front of the camera in Germany and Austria. In television he had a permanent role from 1965 to 1981 as Dr. Steven Jackson in the Springfield Story series .

He was married to Joan Pittman (one child) from 1939 to 1945 and to Marion Kohler (two children) from 1947. He lived with his second wife in Rowayton ( Connecticut ) for 45 years and founded the Rainbow Theater with her. In 1992 he settled in Rogaro on Lake Como .
