Philip Norman Alderslade (born November 24, 1943 in Edmonton , UK) is a British soft coral taxonomist . In 1995 he did his PhD at James Cook University .

Alderslade worked as a research assistant in the zoology department of the University of Queensland , then from 1974 to 1981 he took a position as a marine biologist at the Roche Research Institute of Marine Pharmacology in Sydney . Since 1981 he has been the curator of cnidarians at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin .

He mainly deals with the systematics of the Octocorallia and, together with Katharina Fabricius, has published the standard work Soft Corals and Sea Fans, a comprehensive guide to the tropical shallow-water genera of the Central-West Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea .

Paraminabea aldersladei

The soft coral Paraminabea aldersladei (Williams, 1992) and the multi- bristle Alcyonosyllis phili Glasby & Watson, 2001, which lives as a commensal on the gorgonian Melithaea flabellifera , were named in honor of Alderslades. In 2006 Lisa-Ann Gershwin named a new genus of hydrozoans Aldersladia
