The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is located in the port of Darwin in the Northern Territory in Australia . It is the most important museum in the Northern Territory, located in the Fannie Bay area of Darwin and under the supervision of a Northern Territory Ministry, the Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport . The museum is known for its extensive specimen collection and collection of Aboriginal art .

history

In 1964, the Northern Territory Legislative Council in Darwin passed a law to establish this museum.

The museum was to be housed in the Old Town Hall in Darwin's city center, but Cyclone Tracy , which raged from 24 to 25 1974, destroyed the almost completely renovated building. On September 10, 1981, the new museum opened in its current location. The museum was expanded in 1992 to include the maritime history of the Northern Territory and in 1993 the museum was given its current name.

Museum offers

The museum displays Aboriginal and fine arts , craft artifacts , Southeast Asian and Oceanic Pacific arts and crafts, marine archeology , Northern Territory history, and scientific works.

A library houses the museum, the Peter Spillett Library , with 10,000 monographs, 1,000 magazines, annual reports, maps and audio-visual materials.

The museum, which is located in a park with large trees and tropical palm trees, seeks to connect with its visitors and therefore the park can also be rented for private events, parties at sunset or wedding parties.

A particularly important prize, the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award , has been presented annually since 1984 to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists on the premises of the museum.
