Ludwig von Schwabe

Georg Franz Ludwig Friedrich Schwabe , from 1880 by Schwabe , (born June 24, 1835 in Gießen ; † February 20, 1908 in Tübingen ) was a German classical philologist and archaeologist .

He studied classical philology and archeology in Giessen and Göttingen , received his doctorate in Giessen in 1857 and completed his habilitation in 1859. He then worked as a private lecturer and in 1863 became an associate professor in Giessen. At the end of 1863 he accepted a call from the University of Dorpat as a full professor of classical philology, became director of the university library in 1865 and dean in 1867 . Finally, in 1872, he became a full professor for classical philology and professor for classical archeology at the University of Tübingen , where he was rector from 1881 to 1882.

He paid particular attention to the coin collection in the squirrel cupboard of the Archaeological Institute in Tübingen, which he led to national importance through targeted new acquisitions.

In 1880 he was raised to the personal nobility by being awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown . From 1894 he was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
