Thomas Schäfer (archaeologist)

Thomas Schäfer (born December 11, 1953 in Göttingen ) is a German classical archaeologist .

After studying classical archeology , ancient history and Christian archeology at the universities of Göttingen , Bonn , Hamburg , Heidelberg and Rome was he in 1982 at the University of Heidelberg in Tonio Holscher with a working Roman magistrates over the presentation of the insignia on their tombs doctorate and received 1982–1983 travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1984 to 1989 he was a research assistant at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens, then a research assistant at the Universities of Cologne and Frankfurt / Main. In 1995 he was at the University of Frankfurt with the work Andres Agathoi. The question of realism or fictionality in the representation of the human being in the Greek classical period qualified as a professor. In 1998 he became Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Greifswald , and since 2003 he has been Professor and Director of the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Tübingen . In the summer of 2009, Schäfer was elected a full member of the Philosophical-Historical Class of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

He published numerous publications in the field of Greek and Roman iconography . Since 2000, he and Massimo Osanna have headed a German-Italian excavation project on the Italian island of Pantelleria .
