August Preuner (born September 14, 1832 in Öhringen , † September 15, 1906 in Greifswald ) was a German classical archaeologist who worked as a professor at the University of Greifswald (1866-1903).

Life

August Preuner studied philology, archeology and theology at the University of Tübingen , since 1853 as a scholarship holder of the Freiherrlich v. Palmschen Foundation. As a student, he was already working on the catalog of bronze sculptures owned by the university, which appeared in 1858, on behalf of Professor Ernst Christian Walz . On January 2, 1859 he received his doctorate . After the probationary year at the Stuttgart grammar school , Preuner completed his habilitation in 1864 at the University of Tübingen for philology and held lectures there as a private lecturer. After his marriage in 1866 he accepted a position at the University of Greifswald , where he taught archeology and ancient history as an associate professor . In 1871 he was appointed full professor. In the academic year 1880/1881 he was rector of the university. In 1903 he retired .

During his time in Tübingen, Preuner dealt with the goddess Hestia / Vesta , on whose cult and nature he published several papers. During his time in Greifswald he wrote small archaeological writings (on the Venus de Milo and the Palatine Hill ). More important was his endeavor to maintain the university's cast collection, which he enlarged through new purchases and the development of new rooms.

The epigraphist Erich Preuner (1867–1935) was his son.
