Erich Preuner
Erich Preuner (born May 11, 1867 in Greifswald , † March 29, 1935 in Lübeck ) was a German epigraphist and classical archaeologist .
Life
Erich Preuner, the son of Greifswald archeology professor August Preuner , studied classical philology and archeology at the University of Bonn . In addition to the philologists Franz Bücheler and Hermann Usener , he was particularly influenced by the archaeologists Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz and Georg Loeschcke . After graduating, Preuner did his military service and went on research and educational trips to the Mediterranean countries.
Preuner began his academic career at the University of Strasbourg , where he received his doctorate in 1900 and his habilitation in 1903 . His venia legendi included "archeology, epigraphy and antiquarian auxiliary sciences". Three years later (1906) Preuner moved to the University of Berlin . His task as associate professor for classical antiquity and archeology was primarily to maintain the connection between philology and archeology in academic teaching. In the year of his appointment, he was also made a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
Preuner worked in Berlin until shortly before his death. In addition to his teaching activities, he participated in various projects of the Prussian Academy of Sciences : As part of the Greek inscription collection ( Inscriptiones Graecae ), he worked on the inscriptions of Laconia , Messenia , Aetolia and Attica . Preuner's independent research also consisted mainly of the edition of Greek inscriptions, which he drew from various sources. For example, he sifted through the diaries, papers and personal papers of Jacob Linckh , Ludwig Ross , Karl Otfried Müller , Nicolaus Heinrich Ulrichs and Carl Curtius . Preuner's special fields of research were the artistic and gymnastic competitions and the artist's inscriptions of the Greeks.
Preuner died after a long and serious illness a year after his retirement in Lübeck.
