The Inscriptiones Graecae ("Greek Inscriptions", abbreviated IG ) are an academy project at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , which collects and publishes all known ancient inscriptions of the Greek mainland and the Greek islands.

From 1825 to 1877, the Berlin Academy of Sciences, under the direction of August Böckh, published all of the inscriptions known at the time in the Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum . New discoveries made a complete revision necessary, which began with the edition of the Attic inscriptions by Adolf Kirchhoff , Ulrich Köhler and Wilhelm Dittenberger from 1873 to 1888 (Corpus Inscriptionum Atticarum) . Additional volumes with inscriptions from northern Greece, the Greek islands and the Peloponnese followed until 1902. took over this year Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff the management of the inscription work and organized it again while drawing on Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum oriented, that of Theodor Mommsen justified Compilation of all Latin inscriptions. The project now called Inscriptiones Graecae , the volumes of which have now been numbered, was limited to the inscriptions of the Greek motherland; Greek inscriptions outside of present-day Greece are recorded in other collections (e.g. Inscriptiones Graecae in Bulgaria repertae , Tituli Asiae Minoris or inscriptions from Greek cities from Asia Minor ). In addition, the autopsy principle has applied to the edition since then .

So far 49 (partial) volumes have been published, some of them already being revised (especially with the Attic inscriptions). The editing of the individual volumes is partly taken over by external scientists, in this case the editorial support takes place at the Berlin Academy. There is also an extensive archive of copies of Greek inscriptions. The current project manager has been Peter Funke since 2007 , and Klaus Hallof is the head of the office . In addition to the aforementioned scientists, the editors of earlier volumes included Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen , Johannes Kirchner and Günther Klaffenbach , and former project managers Peter Herrmann and Robert Malcolm Errington .

All editorial remarks and comments are traditionally written in Latin , which is occasionally criticized in view of the declining spread of this language and the greater workload for the editors. The inscriptions have so far been published without a translation, but for some time now translations into German have been offered on the IG website for the newly published fascicles .

The Inscriptiones Graecae are published by de Gruyter Verlag , Berlin.
