Ludwig Mercklin
Ludwig Mercklin (born July 11, 1816 in Riga , † September 15, 1863 in Dorpat ) was a German-Baltic classical philologist .
origin
Ludwig Mercklin came from an old Baltic family of scholars and pastors. His parents were the doctor Eugen Mercklin (1792–1873) and his first wife Friederike geb. Lark (1793-1831). His brothers were the botanist Carl Eugen von Mercklin (1821-1904) and the Russian Major General August Mercklin (1823-1892).
Life
Ludwig Mercklin studied classical philology at the University of Dorpat from 1835 , where he was particularly encouraged by Karl Morgenstern and Christian Friedrich Neue . He was a member of the Fraternitas Rigensis . After graduating in 1838, Mercklin went to Moscow as a high school teacher, but returned to Dorpat in 1840 after a trip abroad. There he completed his habilitation and taught as a private lecturer. In 1846 he went on a research trip through Italy. In 1851 he was appointed as the successor of Ludolf Stephanis as extraordinary professor of "eloquence, classical philology, aesthetics and the history of art". According to the broad description of the teaching, Mercklin held philological, literary and archaeological lectures and seminar exercises, since 1852 as a full professor.
With the support of the Russian state, Mercklin went on extensive study trips through Germany, France and England in 1860. On his return he started a collection of plaster casts for the University of Dorpat as a result of his collecting activity. In 1861 he fell ill with cancer and in 1862 he left the university. On the occasion of his retirement he was appointed to the Russian State Council. He died on September 15, 1863 after a long illness at the age of 47.
Mercklin's own research focused on Roman sacred law and Latin literary history. His writings intervened in current research, but were largely forgotten after his death, as he published them scattered and difficult to access. A collection of his small writings has not been published.
