Ernst August Carus

Ernst August Carus (born July 10, 1797 in Leipzig , † May 26, 1854 in Berlin ) was a German surgeon and university professor .

Life

Carus, son of the philosopher Friedrich August Carus , attended the Princely School Pforta from May 9, 1809 to March 18, 1815 . From 1815 to 1822 he studied philosophy, fine arts, music and medicine at the University of Leipzig . In 1822 he was awarded the dissertation De vi naturae medica trice in shape andis cicatricibus to Dr. med. PhD . He then visited clinics in Göttingen and Berlin. In 1823 he completed his habilitation at the Medical Faculty of Leipzig University and then taught as a private lecturer in surgery and ophthalmology.

Carus established himself as a general practitioner in Colditz in 1824 , but his health suffered from the exertion as a country doctor . In 1829, alongside Johann Karl Wilhelm Walther, he was appointed head of the Surgical Outpatient Clinic in Leipzig and chief surgeon of the Georgenspital in Leipzig, and at the same time he was appointed professor of surgery at the University of Leipzig . In 1844 he accepted a call as a full professor of surgery at the University of Dorpat . There he also took over the management of the surgical clinic. In 1853 he was diagnosed with tongue cancer. As a result he was forced to resign and finally died in Berlin while passing through.

Carus owned a private orthopedic clinic in Leipzig and also founded the first orthopedic institute in Leipzig. He is said to have been an art-loving man and his house was a meeting place for artists, including Robert Schumann and his father-in-law Friedrich Wieck among his guests.

He married on November 19, 1822 Charlotte Agnes Florentine Küster (born June 3, 1802, † March 6, 1839), a daughter of the commission council Küster from Leipzig. The couple had several children:
