Johann Karl Wilhelm Walther

Johann Karl Wilhelm Walther (also Johann Walther or Johann Carl Wilhelm Walther ; born January 6, 1796 in Leipzig ; † February 3, 1859 ibid) was a German surgeon and university professor .

Life

With the exception of a long trip, Walther's life took place in Leipzig. There he studied medicine with a focus on surgery. It was in 1820 with the dissertation De hernia crurali to Dr. med. PhD . He then went on an approximately three-year study trip. After his return in 1823 he completed his habilitation at the University of Leipzig . In the following years he taught surgery at the university as a private lecturer .

Walther also settled in Leipzig as a general practitioner . In 1828 he became a forensic surgeon and later a police doctor. In 1830 he was appointed head of the University Polyclinic alongside Ernst August Carus and after his departure from 1845 alongside Karl Gottlob Francke . In 1831 he was appointed associate professor of surgery at the Leipzig Faculty of Medicine. In 1842 he was appointed full professor and retired in 1849 . However, he taught as a full honorary professor until 1857 .
