Chips Rafferty (born March 26, 1909 in Broken Hill , † May 27, 1971 in Sydney ) was an Australian actor and film producer .

Live and act

Rafferty was a cattle drover in the outback , a prospector in an opal mine and a seaman in his early teens. In the late 1930s he tried his hand at acting and found access to film. His breakthrough came in The Great Drifting as trek leader Dan McAlpine, who in 1942 drove a large herd over 1,600 miles into southern Australia before the feared attack by the Japanese. The tall Rafferty celebrated another success in gold diggers as Peter Lalor in his struggle for self-determination against a British governor.

His popularity also brought him offers from Great Britain and Hollywood, where he did not get beyond insignificant supporting roles. In 1952 he founded the production company Playtypus Productions, in 1953 the film company Southern International, which, however, could not hold its own against the overwhelming Anglo-American competition.
