The Racket is an American crime and gangster film directed by Lewis Milestone from 1928. The silent film is considered a forerunner of the film noir that emerged in the 1940s .

action

The honorable police officer Captain James McQuigg becomes a relentless rival of the powerful black marketeer Nick Scarsi, although his investigations cannot blame him, because Scarsi and his organization control corrupt police officers and judges. When Scarsi cannot intimidate McQuigg, he is transferred to a quiet police station in a suburb.

McQuigg continues his struggle through a "war of words" with the help of some newspaper reporters. The fight comes to a head recently as Scarsis brother Joe because of a hit and run offense in McQuiggs area is arrested and this a complex plan sets in motion the bonds to case to bring. McQuigg used and in addition to reporters and a nightclub - singer , the upcoming elections and ultimately Scarsis own organization.

At the first Academy Awards in 1929 , the film was nominated in the category of best film , but lost to the war film Wings by William A. Wellman .
