Robert Israel

Robert Israel (born April 30, 1963 in Los Angeles , California , USA) is an American silent film accompanist, organist, pianist and composer.

life and work

Israel began playing the piano at the age of 16. At the age of 17 he began to accompany silent films professionally. He was sponsored by the theater organist Gaylord Carter (1905–2000). In 1988 he graduated from California State University, Northridge with a degree in music.

He teaches as a guest at various film schools in Southern California and appears as a soloist and orchestra director in the USA, Japan and Europe, especially at film festivals. At the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences he was music director 13 times in a row.

Favorite instruments include theater and cinema organs such as the Wurlitzer organ in Barnum Hall in Santa Monica , the Plummer Auditorium Theater in Fullerton or the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles , as well as the NDR's Welte radio organ. But he also plays on large church and concert organs such as the Ascension Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks and the Royce Hall in Los Angeles or on the piano.

Compositions (selection)

In 2009 Israel's 1995 music version of Buster Keaton's classic "The General" was released on DVD. In 2011, Warner Archive Classics released Rex Ingrams “The Magician” (1926) on DVD with music by Robert Israel.

New symphonic accompanying music appeared for Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's “Phantom” (1922) and for Louis Feuillade's twelve-part “Judex” (1916). For Erich von Stroheim's “Greed” (1924), he reconstructed a new film score of almost four hours.

Over 20 new compositions were created for the films by Harold Lloyd .

Appearances

On June 8, 2011, Israel accompanied Fred Niblo's “The Mark Of Zorro” (1920) on the piano at a silent film evening in the pub “Das Heinz” in Vienna . Israel made another guest appearance on May 27, 2013 in the restaurant "Das Heinz" during a silent film evening with slapsticks.

At the turn of December 2013 / January 2014, the culture channel Arte broadcast the slapstick short films "Behind the Screen", "The Pawn Shop" and "The Adventurer", which Charles Chaplin shot for Mutual Co. in 1916 , on German television accompanied by the Robert Israel Orchestra from.

For Arte (Lobster Film) in 2013 he also contributed the music for a documentary about Chaplin with the original title La Naissance de Charlot .
